Hurricane or tornado twists
then lightening
cracks and splits
 the forest's mighty oaks

rain soaks the shallow roots
spread out like giant fingers
on such little earth
 it takes your breath away
to see the fragile tendrils
holding on for their dear life

 maples, ash, white pines fallen
what's left of them have all my heart
in their decay unfolding
 folding back to earth

split leg

Broken
spine ripped
through my middle
down my seam
wind a horse of steam
unleashed heavens hand
mighty blackness forged forward
downward
to my roots
I thought were so secure
